In recent times, we have witnessed a great shift in the way people commute in cities. Due to traffic congestion and the heightened level of pollution, metro rail has emerged as one of the best modes of transport in tier-1 and tier-2 cities. While the plan is to improve the inter-city network by metro lines, it seems to be a long way ahead, as there are still many ongoing projects that are incomplete.
Here is a list of the status of various metro projects in India:
Hyderabad Metro Line
Hyderabad is on its way in becoming the global centre for IT and entrepreneurs, and the development of Metro connectivity has been instrumental in bringing the change. This has a clear impact on the real estate market of the city, which is now a great destination to check out for investors. The metro line is being constructed at a budget of Rs 18,800 crores, extends 72 kilometres. Stages 3 and 4 of the metro lines are still under construction.
Ahmedabad Metro Line
Like Hyderabad, Ahmedabad is growing steadily, as it provides an affordable market with great infrastructure to the working population. The average property price in the city is rising due to developmental projects. Hence, metro connectivity is surely going to boost the growth of this city. Recently, PM Modi inaugurated Phase-I of the Ahmedabad metro line on March 4, 2019. The plan consists of four phases connecting different parts of the city. It is expected that the Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar Metro will become operational by 2020. The metro project has already consumed Rs. 3, 058.35 crores.
Srinagar Metro Rail Project
Srinagar metro plan has not been drawn out even on papers; therefore, it becomes hard to predict the actual commencement. The government agency was expected to submit the comprehensive plan by September 2017. However, it is still not ready. The delay in the project would also result in cost escalation due to several external and internal factors.
Mumbai is the dream city, and hence the gates of the city are always open for the people from across the country. Thus the streets of this city remain crowded irrespective of day or night. As of now, the local trains are the life-line of the city’s transport system but the development of metro will take up a lot of load from the already busy roads. The metro project in Mumbai has been getting delayed time and again due to issues like loan approval or slow construction. The project is divided into three phases with a cost of ₹19,525 crore. Currently, only line 1 of the project is operational that connects Versova to Ghatkopar, and only one other line is under construction, while the rest are either waiting for approvals or execution.
The other cities where metro projects are under construction are Nagpur, Noida, Kanpur and the cities where metro lines are proposed consist of Pune, Bhopal, Indore, Chandigarh and Patna. The delay in beginning the projects would lead to an increased cost due to the rise in the prices of the raw materials and labour. We can only hope that government processes and permissions should not eat up the time that would cost heavy for the economy of the country.
